PhD in biophysics, Germany

The goal of this joint project of the Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, the Insti-tute for X-ray Physics and the Third Institute of Physics is to understand the molecular and cytoskeleton dynamics of migrating eukaryotic cells. In particular, we investigate the me-chanical processes that determine cell shape dynamics and their coupling to intracellular processes. We focus on the model organism Dictyostelium discoideum, which is THE model organism of chemotaxis and shows a fascinating life cycle. After six hours of starvation, it migrates chemotactically towards increasing concentrations of the signaling molecule cAMP. Using microfluidic devices and advanced high-speed and high-resolution optical mi-croscopy we want to investigate the signaling dynamics and the reorganization of cytoskele-tal biopolymers in the cell cortex.

The PhD candidate who will work in our group (Third Institute of Physics) will be concerned with developing cutting-edge new microscopy techniques (superresolution fluorescence microscopy, phase imaging, multiplane imaging, fluorescence lifetime imaging) for rapid and high-resolution live cell imaging. The applicant should have a master in physical and/or optical sciences or related field. A good knowledge in experimental physics and a strong in-terest in advanced optics will be required for the position. For the project, our group pro-vides an ideal research environment with a highly international and interdisciplinary team of excellent scientists.

The position is offered for 3 years (start: July 1st). The work time is 75% of that of a full position (29,85 hours per week), and salary will be paid according to the tarif "TV-L E13."
