Ph.D. studentship at the Biomedical Center, University of Iceland, Iceland


We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated researcher for a Ph.D. position focusing on profiling metabolites in breast cancer tissue at the University of Iceland, Reykjavík. The PhD. student will be enrolled in to the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

This project is supported by the Icelandic Science and Technology Council Research Fund for three years.

Field of work
The objective of this study is to improve diagnostic tools for breast cancer by profiling metabolic phenotypes in breast cancer tissue. In collaboration with experts at Imperial Collage London, the newly developed desorption electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) imaging analysis will be used for this purpose. The Ph.D. candidate will perform all tissue DESI-MS and data profiling analysis at Imperial College London. Following disease and prognostic related analysis will be performed at University of Iceland.

The studentship is at the Biomedical Center ( and is associated with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Qualification requirements
We are looking for an excellent student with a MSc degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedicine, medicine, analytical chemistry, biomedical engineering or related fields. Individuals that do not have a MSc degree, but fulfil the admission requirements for doctoral studies at the School of Health Sciences, can also apply.
Good laboratory and analytical skills.
Good Computer skills.
Fluency in both written and spoken English.
Experience in mass spectrometry analysis, including knowledge in lipidomics and metabolomics would be desirable.
Knowledge in statistical analysis and working with large data sets would be desirable.
Knowledge in cancer biology would be desirable.
The applicant needs to be able to work independently and have strong communication and interpersonal skills.
The applicant must meet the requirements needed to enrol into the School of Health Sciences Ph.D. program.
