The Department of Information Technology conducts research and education in a spectrum of areas within Computer Science and Information Technology. The research is organized in five Divisions, and the research at the Division of Scientific Computing has a broad scope, ranging from numerical analysis over software development and high-performance computing to collaborative projects in Computational Science and Engineering and industrial applications. The Division of Visual Information and Interaction houses a unique combination of expertise in computerized image analysis and human-computer interaction. The Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences has about 130 employees and a number of guest researchers and scholarship students. The Department has ten research groups with a common administration and we are engaged in research and teaching in biochemistry, pharmacology, pharmaceutical and drug addiction, pharmacotherapy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacometrics and toxicology. The Science for Life Laboratory, SciLifeLab, is a Swedish national center for molecular biosciences with focus on health and environmental research. The center combines frontline technical expertise with advanced knowledge of translational medicine and molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a joint effort between Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University. SciLifeLab was established in 2010 and appointed a national center in 2013. Today, approximately 1,500 persons work at the center’s two sites in Stockholm and Uppsala (www.scilifelab.se).

Research project: You will join a recently started project that will run for 5 years and which is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). This interdisciplinary project aims at developing new, intelligent ways of processing and managing very large amounts of microscopy images in order to be able to leverage the imminent explosion of image data from modern experimental setups in the biosciences. One central idea is to represent datasets as intelligently formed and maintained information hierarchies, and to prioritize data acquisition and analysis to certain regions/sections of data based on automatically obtained metrics for usefulness and interestingness. To arrive at such smart systems for scientific discovery in image data, we will pursue a range of topics such as efficient data mining in image data, machine learning models with quantifiable confidence that learn an object’s interestingness, and development of intelligent and efficient cloud systems capable of mapping data and compute to a variety of cloud computing and data storage e-infrastructure based on the quality and interestingness of the data. The successful candidates will be expected to collaborate closely with each other and the project partners towards the goals of the project. All candidates are expected to participate in regular research visits to the sites of the industrial partners.
Qualifications: Candidates should have a doctoral degree (PhD or equivalent) in scientific computing, computerized image processing and analysis, bioinformatics, computer science, or another field of relevance for the research topic of one of the projects listed above, at the time of taking on the position. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are required. Further, the applicant should be able to work well in an interdisciplinary team as well as independently, and possess organizational skills and the ability to multitask in a high-pace environment.
Assessment criteria: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research expertise relevant for the candidate’s career age. Here, documented research experience in one or more of the areas relevant for the particular roles listed above, such as computerized image analysis, large-scale data processing and analysis, scientific data management, distributed systems, bioinformatics, machine learning and applied cloud computing are particularly meriting. High-quality publications as principal author in international peer-reviewed journals or conferences are expected. Documented programming skills are of particular importance, as well as successful teamwork and organizational skills. As the project is focused on microscopy data and life science applications, experience and/or strong interest from this field is considered meriting.

Type of employment: Temporary position for 2 years.
Working hours: 100 %. The position is for two years and may include up to 20 % teaching (in English or Swedish) depending on availability and the candidate's career interest.
