For the project A spectroscopic census of Galactic globular clusters funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) the Institute for Astrophysics (IAG) of the Georg August University is looking to fill the positions of
1 Research Assistants and 1 PhD Students
The IAG is member of the consortium for the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). The MUSE consortium (https://www.eso.org/sci/facilities/develop/instruments/muse.html ) with the partner institutes AIP Potsdam, CRAL Lyon, ESO, ETH Zürich, IRAP Toulouse, Leiden, and IAG Göttingen has built MUSE and jointly explores the 250 nights of guaranteed observing time (GTO). One of the scientific projects within the GTO time is the census of Galactic globular clusters (GC) for which more than 1.5 Million spectra of 25 clusters have already been obtained. The data are extracted and analyzed with dedicated software tools developed in our group. Science topics are the spectroscopy of the stellar populations in GCs as well as their dynamics including the determination of the binary fraction and the search for intermediate mass black holes. Applicants are expected to actively participate in the science exploration of this unique spectroscopic data set and to contribute to the development of the analysis tools. Applicants will have the possibility to become MUSE Collaboration Team members with full access to all GTO data. An active participation in the MUSE Collaboration also offers the possibility to contribute to upcoming GTO observations.
The positions should be filled by Nov 1, 2017 (or as soon as possible thereafter). For the Research Assistant, the regular working hours will be 39.8 hours per week with an initially limited contract of 2 years and the possibility for an extension to 3 years. For the PhD student working hours will be at least 19.9 hours per week with a limited contract of 3 years. Salary: Pay grade 13 TV-L.
Successful candidates for the Research Assistant positions will hold a highly qualified PhD in physics or astronomy and have focused on research in stellar astrophysics. PhD student candidates will have a Master’s degree or equivalent in physics with significant experience in astrophysics. These posts are designed to foster young researchers and scientists. PhD student positions give the successful applicants the opportunity to pursue a post-doctoral degree. Under special circumstances, the positions are suitable for half-time.
The University of Göttingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for women. Qualified women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply in fields in which they are underrepresented. The University of Göttingen committed to being a family-friendly institution and supports their employees in balancing work and family life. Its mission is to employ a greater number of severely disabled persons. Applications from severely disabled persons with equivalent qualifications will be given preference.
