The School of Computer Science and Communication at KTH, seeks PhD students within a new Erasmus Mundus PhD programme, see www.kth.se/eurospin.

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 12,000
full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.

CSC is one of Sweden’s most advanced and successful research and education institutions in Information Technology. The activities of the school focus on higher education and research within the traditional core areas of numerical analysis and computer science; from theory building and analysis of mathematical models to algorithm construction, implementation and simulation. Other core areas of growing importance are technology and methods for the support of human communication and computer mediated cooperation over distances in time and space. The applied research includes scientific computing, computer science, computer vision, robotics, computational biology, human-computer interaction, media technology and graphic arts, and communication through speech, language and music. For more information, see

go to"CSC International Website".

The Department of Computational Biology at CSC conducts research about the function of neurons, neuronal networks and the brain, i.e. in computational neuroscience. It is the leading lab in the field of computational neuroscience in Sweden and collaborates closely with Dept. Neuroscience at Karolinska institutet. Within the Erasmus Mundus PhD programme “EuroSPIN” we now seek PhD students with a profile towards neuroinformatics, including computational neuroscience.

This is a four-year, time-limited position. Research students must be registered at two of the EuroSPIN patners, e.g. KTH and another university. The salary or stipend received follows the guidelines provided by the Erasmus Mundus programme.

Qualifications

The ideal applicant has documented competence and skills in computer science and programming as well as in neuroscience and modeling of biological systems. Previous scientific publication in the field is a bonus. The candidates should have good abilities to formulate and reason about scientific questions and to work creatively with such issues as well as to express them clearly in speech and writing. A strong criterion for selection is the applicants expected ability to complete the studies within the time given. An applicant who in the next few months will finish his/her MSc degree will also be considered in the evaluation process.

Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies, possess the ability to work independently and perform critical analysis as well as possessing good levels of cooperative and communicative abilities.

To address its varied work the EuroSPIN consortium aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the environment, especially as concerns its gender structure.
