Project Title: Nonlinear Dynamics and Inverse Problems in Laser Systems and Related Systems

A PhD scholarship is available to support a project in the areas of dynamical systems and inverse problems. This scholarship is funded in conjunction with a major, multi-disciplinary ARC Linkage Project involving applied mathematics, semiconductor device science and physics. It is located in Mathematics at Macquarie University. The aims are the development and analysis of the mathematical models underlying semiconductor laser systems, particularly chaotic laser systems, coupled with the development of robust and reliable predictive methods. Whilst the particular system motivates this study, applications of the theory and methods will have a broader impact in related areas and systems where chaotic data are observed, including financial systems. The project will be independent of major milestones of the ARC Linkage Project in order to allow the candidate to have a self-paced development as a researcher. However, there will be many opportunities for outcomes to be transferred into the major aims of the linkage project, with a beneficial increase in the impact of the PhD research and track record of the successful applicant. The multi-disciplinary nature of the project provides an excellent opportunity for a PhD candidate to be exposed to a team environment while being able to focus on a largely independent project. An excellent candidate will be able to build the research track record for a broad range of careers in mathematical science, including academia.

The living allowance (stipend) in 2010 for full-time MQRES holders is $22,500 tax exempt. A top-up of $10,000 (tax exempt) is also payable in 2010 by the industry partner. Continuation of the top-up, at $10,000 p.a. is expected for two further years, dependent on industry partner support. The start date is contingent upon the Partner Organisation Agreements being signed but is expected to be early 2010.
