The Commission has also announced that 10 Erasmus Mundus GEM Doctoral Fellowships will be
awarded this year. As of September 2010 the GEM PhD School is to welcome it first 

• 6 Category A Erasmus Mundus Fellows

• 4 Category B Erasmus Mundus Fellows

Category A and B fellowships are identical except that the first are eligible to receive a total of €7500
for travel and the latter €3000. Beside their lump travel allowance, each fellowship is made up of two
more components: operational funds and salary/stipend.

Operational funding covers tuition fees and operational costs; whereas the salary/stipend funds
provided for an equitable monthly allowance. The 3 main components in EMJD fellowships are: 

Tuition Fees and Participation Costs
All GEM EM fellows are in principle fully funded from the very start, i.e. the awarded fellowship covers
all salary/stipend costs and operational costs. Accordingly, a single payment system has been set up
wherein  the  enrolled  doctoral  student  pays  his/her  annual  dues  to  the  consortium.  The  GEM
consortium in turn acquits itself of the various costs associated with the student’s enrollments (tuition
fees,  overheads,  insurances  ...).  In  line  with  the  full‐funding  principle  the  GEM  PhD  School’s  annual tuition fee has been set at 3600€/year.

Monthly Revenue
In light of a given doctoral fellow’s chosen JERP he/she will be employed for the 3‐year duration of the
fellowship by the associated coordinating institution. (i.e.  LUISS, the University of Warwick, or the ULB)
In each case Research fellowship employment contracts or equivalents have been set up. Erasmus
Mundus GEM Doctoral Fellows will thus receive a monthly salary provided for by an overall fund of
about 100800€ over the 36 months. 
The exact available monthly sum will vary across institutions due to differences in national legislation
and general cost structures. 
Moreover,  there  will  also  be  variation  in  tax  levels  and  thus  differences  in  the  net  salary  figures.
However, all Erasmus Mundus Fellows will receive comparable monthly salaries which are in line with
the cost of living indexes of their primary European country of residence.
