Germany : European PhD in Socio-Economic and Statistical Studies 2010

Admission

Admission is based upon academic excellence and is open to students with an economic or social science background who meet the admission requirements of their home university. Candidates may be citizens of countries other than those of the partner universities. The application procedure is identical in all Sess.EuroPhD partner universities. Applicants should decide at which university his or her research interests are represented best and should direct their application to the respective university using the online application device of the present website (see instructions for Online Applications below).

A core element of the admission procedure for Sess.EuroPhD is the decision whether candidates have to go through the Preprogramme Academic Training or not. Given the interdisciplinary character of the programme it may prove necessary that applicants are tutored to deepen their knowledge and acquire necessary skills before entering the PhD programme proper. Based on the documents provided and personal interviews the Scientific Board decides in which fields candidates should take additional courses, usually within existing Master Programmes. This evaluation is based on candidates' academic experiences in:

• Empirical research methods
• Applied statistics and multi-variate analysis
• General sociological theory
• Microsociology
• Macrosociology, social structure and institutional analysis
• Micro- and macroeconomic analysis
• Political theory
• Social policy, welfare state analysis
• Urban and regional sociology, social geography
• Demographic studies

Admission Requirements

• Candidates must have completed an academic education with above average results of a minimum of five years in the fields of social sciences or economics
  
• They should have fulfilled the degree requirements equivalent to a Master of Arts as established by the respective national grant authorities or laid down in the guidelines of the respective university
• The degree must be obtained by the beginning of the academic year they want to apply for
• English proficiency at an academic level is assumed
  

Application Deadline

For Humboldt University Berlin, the application deadline is February 15th for the following winter semester. Applicants who proceed to the second round of applications will be interviewed in person in late April and informed in May. All of the other partner universities have deadlines later than February 15th. They may also have additional application rules and procedures about which applicants will be informed once the electronic applications have been received. All applications must be submitted electronically via the present website.
