Subject to the provision of the necessary grant, the faculty hereby calls for applications for fully financed PhD scholarships, partly financed PhD scholarships and free places.

Fully financed PhD scholarships

5 fully financed PhD scholarships are announced to be filled as of 1 March 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter. Graduates and students who expect to complete their Master’s examination no later than 31 January 2010 can apply. Already enrolled PhD students are not eligible unless they were enrolled before 1 September 2008.

The scholarships are awarded for a maximum period of 3 years. If you have previously completed a research year at the Faculty of Health Sciences and wish to get a ½ year’s exemption you have to enclose an application for exemption. If you have previously completed a research year at the Faculty of Health Sciences and do not wish to get the ½ year exemption, you have to enclose a financial statement guaranteeing your pay and other expenses in connection to the project for the last 6 months of your enrolment.

PhD scholarships are granted with a view to carrying out a PhD degree programme and acquiring a PhD degree. It is therefore a prerequisite for a scholarship award is that the applicant is enrolled in a PhD programme. The application for enrolment in the PhD programme must be submitted no later than the application for a scholarship.

As far as PhD scholarships are concerned, salaries and other conditions of employment are covered by the current Circular on employment structure for scientific personnel at Danish universities and the current Circular on the collective agreement for academics in Denmark. Notice is particularly drawn to appendix 5 in the circular: the protocol regarding PhD fellows.

Partly financed PhD scholarships
In addition to the fully financed PhD scholarships 5 2/3 scholarships and 10 1/3 scholarships are available.

The 2/3 scholarships can be applied for by applicants who can enclose a signed commitment to finance the study with DKK 550,000.

The 1/3 scholarships can be applied for by applicants who can enclose a signed commitment to finance the study with DKK 1,100,000.

Apart from the commitment to finance, the same conditions apply as for the fully financed scholarships.

Free places
A number of free places will be awarded to those with the highest priority among those who do not receive a scholarship. Awardees will not be required to pay the normal tuition fee.

Criteria for the granting of scholarships
PhD scholarships are granted by the dean on the recommendation of the Faculty Fellowship Board and in consideration of the overall strategies of the Faculty. The recommendations of the Faculty Fellowship Board are based on documented qualifications showing the applicant’s research ability or potential to do research.

Approximately half of the scholarships are granted to applicants with a background in medicine or odontology. Particular emphasis will be placed on the following points:

  • publications, where published (or accepted) articles with first authorship in respected international journals have priority
  • completed research education (i.e. “Forskningsår”)
  • completed 1- or 1½-year clinical training (klinisk basisår or turnus)
  • marks in the applicant's Master's exam (kandidateksamen)
  • medical or dental qualification (cand.med. or cand.odont.), in particular for projects which are based on a pre-clinical institute
  • relevant time abroad
  • candidates with a relevant foreign Master’s exam
  • recentness of Master's exam, although post-Master's experience will also be valued if it is relevant for the project.
  • other relevant qualifications, e.g. ongoing research activity following a research year or Master’s thesis.

All applicants will be evaluated in accordance with the above mentioned criteria with no regards to any possible financial statements.
