Call for Papers
Denmark : Call for Phd Admission in Aarhus Graduate School of Science -Scholarships and Fully Funded Projects
Applications are invited for admission to AGSoS, Aarhus Graduate School of Science, at the University of Aarhus. A few AGSoS scholarships and a number of fully funded projects are available in this call.
The present call has reference no. 2009-218/5-29 and is aimed at students starting 1 May 2010 or later. The call is based on applicants with an academic record corresponding to at least a bachelor’s degree.
Details on how to apply are available here. Applications are submitted electronically with deadline 1 February 2010 at 12.00 noon - Central European Time.
PHD EDUCATION:
In Denmark, and hence also at AGSoS, the total time of university studies for a PhD degree is 8 years (480 ECTS) following the Bologna Framework. Admission to the PhD studies at AGSoS is based on either
• a five year (300 ECTS) MSc degree, in which case the student is admitted for a PhD programme of study only, or
• a three year (180 ECTS) BSc degree, in which case the student is admitted in parallel to a PhD- and an MSc Honours programme of study.
In both cases, a student may be admitted with transfer of merits, based on an individual assessment. As an example, a student may be admitted based on four years of full time study for a 4 year PhD programme (the well established "4+4 model").
All PhD studies are divided into two parts, referred to as parts A and B. Part A is terminated with a so-called qualifying exam, typically scheduled to take place two years before the expected time of completion of the PhD study. The qualifying exam must be passed in order to continue with the remaining part B of the PhD studies, and for students admitted in parallel to an Honours MSc program, passing this qualifying exam also provides the student formally with an Honours MSc degree.
AGSoS and a number of its associated research schools/groups offer funding for PhD studies. The number of applicants to the school usually exceeds the number of scholarships available. Applicants are therefore advised also to seek funding from other sources (although this does not guarantee admission).
The scholarships awarded by AGSoS vary depending on the student’s educational qualifications:
- PhD scholarships are awarded to students who have not yet obtained a master’s degree, that is, students enrolled also for an honours master’s degree and not yet having passed the PhD qualifying exam. For students not holding a Danish SU support (or the equivalent thereof) for their MSc studies, the scholarship amounts to approximately DKK 10.000 per month before tax (2008). For students holding a Danish SU support (or the equivalent thereof) for their MSc studies, the scholarship amounts to approximately DKK 5.000 per month during the first year of the honours MSc programme, and DKK 10.000 per month for the remaining two years – both before tax (2008).
- PhD fellowships are awarded when students are admitted on the basis of a master’s degree or have passed the PhD qualifying exam. The fellowship is granted for a period of up to three years, and is granted in accordance with the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations, and the entry of 4 April 2003 about PhD scholars. The basic salary amounts to approx. DKK 25,000 per month before tax, including pension and holiday pay.
BRICS
The computer science field has reseach activities in both theoretical and experimental computer science, centered around the Department of Computer Science. All PhD students in the field are affiliated with the PhD school of computer science, BRICS (Basic Research in Computer Science) http://cs.au.dk/studies/phd-school
BRICS organizes activities and courses for students, and has various sources of funding for PhD stipends. The main research activities in computer science are found in the areas of Algorithms and Complexity, Computer Graphics, Cryptography and Security, Human-Computer Interaction, Modelling and Verification, Object Oriented Programming, Programming Languages and Formal Methods, Robot Technology and Scientific Computing. Further information on research groups and activities can be found at http://cs.au.dk/research/areas/
CARB
A number of stipends is expected to be available at the Centre for Carbohydrate Recognition and Signalling - CARB funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The aim is to investigate interactions between cells and organisms by investigating the role of cell wall glycans and polysaccharides exposed on cell surfaces, and polysaccharide signal molecules secreted as part of a complex interaction between organisms. Individual PhD projects are designed within an interdisciplinary group applying molecular genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, chemistry, protein crystallography and bioinformatics to study carbohydrate signals and signal perception.
Further information is available from the CARB center director, professor Jens Stougaard, Department of Molecular Biology, Gustav Wieds Vej 10, 8000 C Aarhus, Phone +45 89 42 50 11. E-mail stougaard@mb.au.dk
CTN
A number of scholarships are expected to be available for students wishing to read for a PhD at institutions affiliated with the Centre for Theory in Natural Science (www.CTN.au.dk) at the University of Aarhus.
There are a number of international well-established research environments at the University of Aarhus and Theoretical Science has been chosen as a research priority area, because the convergence of methods and ideas in theory-formation to great extend unites natural science disciplines. The research priority area is supported by the Centre for Theory in Natural Science, whose purpose is to stimulate new theoretical teaching and research activities by means of financial and other support. In addition there is PhD training and candidates in all PhD programmes are encouraged to emphasize their affiliation with the Centre for Theory in Natural Science, e.g. as a result of theoretical interdisciplinary problems arising in the course of the research project.
Further information is available at CTN’s website www.CTN.au.dk or upon request from Professor Klaus Mølmer, ph. 8942 3679, e-mail address: moelmer@phys.au.dk.
The mRNP Centre
Stipends are expected to be available at the “Centre for mRNP Biogenesis and Metabolism” funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Topical research within the centre includes i) Mechanisms of mRNP formation and Quality Control, ii) Quality control of the human transcriptome, and iii) The function of RNA helicases. Structure/function relationships of the above topics are also under investigation.
Further information is available from centre director, Torben Heick Jensen, Dept. of Molecular Biology, tel: 8942 2609, email: thj@mb.au.dk.
MADALGO
A number of stipends are expected to be available at the Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO), funded by the Danish National Research Foundation (www.madalgo.au.dk). The aim is to investigate the design, analysis and implementation of algorithms and data structures for processing massive data (interpreted broadly to cover computations where data is large compared to the computational resources), with focus on I/O-efficient, cache-oblivious and streaming algorithms. Further information is available at www.madalgo.au.dk, or from the MADALGO center director, professor Lars Arge, Dept. of Computer Science, tel: 8942 9336, email: large@cs.au.dk.
