PhD student in theoretical particle physics

A PhD student position is available in the Theoretical High Energy Physics group within the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University. The group currently consists of three faculty members and two graduate students, and we are now in the process of recruiting a graduate student. Our group does research in particle physics at the high energy frontier to study matter and its interactions on the most fundamental level. Our approach is theoretical, but in close contact with experimental reality; an area of research known as phenomenology.

The Standard Model for quarks and leptons with electroweak and strong interactions has been very successful, but leaves fundamental unsolved problems, such as the confinement of quarks and gluons into hadrons, the origin of electroweak symmetry breaking, and the generation of particle masses. Theories beyond the Standard Model, which may provide solutions, are therefore of great importance.

Our research group collaborates internationally with focus on the theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), and theories beyond the Standard Model with projects concerning:

• perturbative and non-perturbative QCD
• interplay between QCD and signals for new physics
• models & signals for physics beyond the Standard Model
• Higgs bosons at hadron colliders
• Monte Carlo event generators
• astroparticle physics and dark matter

The research project for the new graduate student will be within any of the areas where we are active, but its details defined through discussions to take into account her/his interests and preferences.
