Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology

PhD Scholarships are available to support research in the following research directions:
1. Nanoporous materials for bio-catalysis, bio-separation and bio-analysis;
2. Nanoporous materials for anti-cancer drug delivery;
3. Biomaterials for bone repair and dental applications

The Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) has a unique multidisciplinary focus with leading edge researchers working at the interface of the biological, chemical and physical sciences. The Institute’s research focuses on producing new products, processes and devices for improving human health and quality of life.

Within the AIBN, Professor Chengzhong Michael Yu leads a research group focused on novel nanoporous and nanostructured materials for biotechnology, clean energy and environment protection. He has research interests in sol-gel chemistry and self-assembly strategies to understand the fundamental structure-property correlations and to design functional nanostructured composites in biomaterials, bio-analysis, proteomics, drug delivery, catalysis, photo-catalysis, and environmental chemistry. With scholarships, we seek high quality science and engineering graduates to undertake research in the above areas and within this research team environment.

PhD project: The PhD studentship will work with a team funded by the ARC and AIBN, UQ. The PhD students may work in one or more of the above-mentioned directions. Through the PhD program, the PhD student will receive systematic training in frontier nanotechnology, including the synthesis techniques of novel nanoporous and nanostructured materials, the-state-of-the-art characterization methods to solve the fine nano-structures, and the functions and applications of nano-materials in a range of advanced bio-applications.

The Person: Award of scholarships will be based on academic merit, research experience and/or potential, a background in materials science, chemistry, materials engineering, biomedical engineering or chemical engineering.

• You must hold or expect to hold a Bachelor's degree with Honours Class I (IIA will be considered) or a Masters Degree.
• You must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or New Zealand citizen when applying for admission
• You may be of any age

Remuneration: The stipend will be at the Australian Postgraduate Award rate of $22,500 per annum tax free for three years (top ups available based on merit), with the possibility of a six month extension in approved circumstances.

Contact: Further information regarding both projects can be obtained by contacting Prof Chengzhong Michael Yu c.yu@uq.edu.au.

Applications: Please send a cover letter and curriculum vitae outlining your interest and suitability for this position to:
