2 x PhD Studentship
School of Medicine, Paediatrics and Child Health, The University of Queensland

Royal Children’s Hospital Children’s Centre for Burns Research (CCBR), Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute (QCMRI)

Two PhD studentship positions are available in the Children’s Centre for Burns Research within the Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute, The University of Queensland. The Research group is located at the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) within the Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute (QCMRI) precinct under The University of Queensland Faculty of Health Sciences and School of Medicine. Research activity within the group focuses on burn wounds including, first aid, assessment of novel burn treatments, the basic cell biology underlying wound healing, novel interventions to avoid scarring and fibrosis and skin tissue engineering. The Children’s Centre for Burns Research (CCBR) is one of the leading burns research groups in Australia.

The group is lead by Dr. James McMillan (j.mcmillan@uq.edu.au) Head of Burns Research Laboratory and Professor Roy Kimble, the Director of Paediatric Burns &Trauma, and currently comprises four full time scientists, a full time burns prevention research officer, a burns fellow, 3 PhD students and associated clinical staff. The laboratory is situated close to the Royal Children’s Hospital Burns Centre and therefore the clinical and laboratory aspects of the research are well integrated. The group focuses on several areas of burns research including development of new treatments (including tissue engineering), scar management, immunology of wounding, fetal wound healing and improving existing burn treatments together with burns prevention. The group wishes to expand its research profile with the aim of becoming a Research Centre of Excellence in the field of paediatric burns research. To this end we are recruiting students who can work on one of several tissue engineering research projects within the burns laboratory in conjunction with AIBN-based laboratories at St Lucia. These projects will determine new avenues of research the group should pursue. These student positions will initially be for a three year position and the studentships (APA, UQRS, UQIRTA or other funding bodies) must be applied to.

The candidate will be based within the newly refurbished Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute (QCMRI) within the Discipline of Paediatrics and Child Health, University of Queensland, Herston with some time spent at the AIBN, St Lucia.

The Role: The studentship role will be to study, prepare, conduct and write up reports on scientific research conducted by the Children’s Centre for Burns Research, QCMRI.

The Person:Applicants should possess an honours Bachelor (H1 or H2A) or Masters Degree majoring in biological science, biochemistry , molecular biology or tissue engineering.

Remuneration:  This stipend will be for 3 – 6 months in the first instance and pays an allowance at the Australian Postgraduate Award rate    $20,427 p.a tax free. Before or during this initial period, a 3 year APA/UQRS/UQIRTA or commercial scholarship sponsorship package must be applied for. Once the successful applicant has been awarded a full-time scholarship, and contingent on their satisfactory progress and the availability of funds a $5000 p.a. top-up scholarship may also be granted.
